The morning of Jake's surgery he wasn't allowed to eat after 5am and only water until 7am, so we thought he would be hungry and grouchy. But in true Jake fashion, he was smiling and flirting with the nurses until they rolled him back to the OR. He is such a brave little boy, and it makes it so much easier on mommy and daddy!
When they got into the operating room, the operation turned out to be a little more complicated than originally planned. We knew that his fontanels were getting fuller and that he was uncomfortable, but what we didn't know was that the actual valve was malfunctioning. So, they not only had to insert new tubing, but make another incision and place a new valve into his shunt. (The malfunctioning valve was sent back to the manufacturer, whom we were not too thrilled with.) The surgery took a little over an hour and then we were able to see him in recovery. He had quite the large bandage and the NSG explained that he had to drill another hole, therefore he closed the original hole and bandaged it with pressure so that the CSF would not leak. We are praying that the incision heals and has no leakage so that we are able to stay out of the hospital for a long time!
After the surgery, we went to a PACU floor, and Jake was such a trooper! He was trying to recover from the anesthesia and wanted to be snuggled. Which was completely fine with mommy! He ate very well and slept his usual 9-6 schedule, not even waking when the nurse came in to start his vancomycin drip.
The next morning he developed a low grade fever, and we were concerned that we wouldn't get to go home that day. His fever gradually decreased throughout the day, and then we were able to come home Thursday evening.
Jake is so much happier than he was for the few weeks preceding the surgery. Even though his incisions are much larger, we can deal with that, because we have a happy, healthy baby now! He even giggled for the FIRST TIME EVER tonight!!! We were so excited!
